Fighting is physical, violent and cathartic, and you find yourself forming genuine attachments to favourite weapons. Demon Boss Souls are special Souls dropped by the final bosses of each area in Demon’s Souls. These Souls can be exchanged for powerful weapons, magic, and miracles. Actually, I take that back; it’s most definitely something everyone should try, but the look, seemingly unforgiving nature and themes might be a bit off-putting. It’s utterly unique among the offerings on any console right now, and absolutely, positively should not be missed.
Ultimately, I’d liken the Demon’s/Dark progression to that of the difference Kaisar138 between the original Zelda and A Link to the Past. ALTTP isn’t that hand-holding relative to most games, but compared to the NES The Legend of Zelda, it’s downright straightforward. That’s pretty much exactly how the Souls series has evolved as its audience and potential platforms grew. That game, remade for the PlayStation 4, takes place in a wide expanse of open wilderness.
You don’t walk away from a game like Demon’s Souls without a few good stories to share. When I think back on my time with the PS5 remake, two moments that occurred fairly early on in the game spring to mind. The Demon’s Souls remake might be the only true next-gen experience on PS5.
Die Faster, Revive Faster On Ps5
The DualSense controller is much bigger than a DualShock 3, which makes it a tiny bit less comfortable to use the infamous “claw grip” that is almost required in a game like Demon’s Souls, but my hands adjusted over the course of X hours it took me to beat it. Most notable, though, is the way the haptics react to you being hit. I need to give a special mention as well to the new ability to send items to your storage box without having to return to the Nexus.

And then you’d also have to trek back to the archstone just so you could offload any unnecessary items. This is an elegant fix that still keeps the inventory management without any of the frustration. We’ll be sure to note useful tidbits as we go so that you can follow along even if you’re not playing through regions in quite the same order and even if you’re leveling up differently than we did. If you find yourself going back and forth between regions, pick the Archstone you’re currently on to get more information on how to move through it and survive. Sometimes you might be at a disadvantage if you don’t have a useful item from another region, but there’s really no rule as to which stages must be tackled in which order throughout the bulk of the game. Using a bow lets you stalk enemies in first-person from a distant turret. Find a wand, and you can cast magic; find a talisman, you can heal yourself with miracles. The closest comparison is Monster Hunter, but Demon’s Souls’ combat controls are more precise; the weapons feel realistic rather than comically extreme.
The game is referred to as a spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s King’s Field series. Players will encounter new items to help them along their way in this 2020 remaster. One notable new item type are Grains, which offer players resistances to specific damage types, allowing you to better prepare themselves against enemies abusing a certain element. Back in February 2022, Sony stated it aimed to launch over 10 new live service games over the coming years. A month later, then-Sony exec Jim Ryan said he believed live service games were a key part of gaming’s future, confident in PlayStation’s live service push. After the first harrowing hour of exploration in Demon’s Souls, you’re dumped into the Nexus and given five portals.

That’s our general tips for completing (basically) the entire game. There’s a lot we missed, but we’ll cover more of the details later! For now, enjoy this incredibly beautiful remaster of a classic game that many of us are finally getting a chance to experience.
The Old One has awoken and I hope this review feeds it more souls. Also, gosh, it’s nice to only wait about eight seconds after a brutal death for the game to load your next life, instead of two whole minutes. That’s just one of many ways Bluepoint makes the die-and-retry reality of a Souls-like so much easier to savor on a new console like PlayStation 5. If you own one, and you’ve got the patience and stomach for challenge, don’t hesitate to purchase this remastered classic. Take your time, pick up everything you find, upgrade your weapons as often as possible, and definitely pay attention to the whereabouts of NPCs. If it’s all too much, don’t be afraid to summon friendly players to help guide you and uncover the secrets hidden within this cult classic.
Demon’s Souls was first released in Japan in February 2009, before making its way to North America on October 6 of that year. Its Japanese release got a somewhat mixed reception, but Demon’s Souls found a warmer welcome elsewhere, going on to become one of the most celebrated games of 2009. And beyond that, it tore down development trends that had taken over the industry, pioneered a new kind of online play, and started a legacy that somehow feels just as fresh today as it did 15 years ago. In Demon’s Souls, we send you back to the fog-ridden kingdom of Boletaria like you’ve never seen it before. Here, death is not the end, and again the challenge seems insurmountable.
There are a few reasons for this, but arguably the most important is that Demon’s Souls is more open-ended than either of its successors. People tend to think of Demon’s Souls as a linear game full of isolated stages, while its Dark descendants opted for an open-world. After its opening level, Demon’s Souls allows you to tackle its five domains in any order.
